Warwickshire’s Carmen Bear led home a selection of the region’s best known sporting mascots at the all-important Friends Life t20 match against Worcestershire on Friday 26th July, to win the first ever West Midlands Mascot Derby.
During the interval of the Bears’ local derby against Worcestershire on Friday night, Hugh and Carmen was joined by Aston Villa’s Bella, Birmingham City’s Beau Brummie, Coventry City’s Sky Blue Sam, Walsall's Swifty Warwickshire C.C.C.'s Hugh Bear and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Wolfie for a race on the outfield.
It was the first time that Bella, Beau, Sam, Swifty and Wolfie had appeared in a competition and it’s certainly something that Hugh and Carmen had been looking forward to.
Carmen, said: “Our Twenty20 match against Worcestershire was our biggest match of the year, so Hugh and I decided to celebrate the occasion by inviting along our footballing friends to Edgbaston to entertain the fans during the interval.
“With such a tough line-up to race against, we’d been training hard in the gym and we hoped that a great crowd would get behind us for the event, which is exactly what happened and to our great delight we won!!!.”
As can be seen from the photographs, Hugh seemed to be wiping tears from his eyes for much of the race, but Carmen held off a late challenge (and a sporting push!!) from the Wolve's mascot Wolfie, to snatch the very first title by a wet nose.
"This will have pride of place next to the honey jar , " Carmen said, after regaining her breath at the conclusion of what proved to be a very exciting race.
