After Northants won the toss and chose to bat, they lost Rob Newton early, when he powerfully drove Chris Wright to Jeetan Patel at cover in the second over. David Sales 26 followed, when playing Boyd Rankin's delivery on to his stumps before Kyle Coetzer edged Ateeq Javid to Tim Ambrose on 35 to give Javid his first wicket in limited overs cricket.
Northants lost captain Alex Wakely 35 to a Jeetan Patel delivery that just clipped his off stump and Matthew Spriegel then went for the same score when he was run out by William Porterfield at long-off. Wright then bowled Andrew Hall before James Middlebrook was taken at point by Porterfield off the same bowler.
Steven Crook’s forty from twenty nine balls at the end of the innings helped Northants reach a competitive 229-9 with Chris Wright 3-47 the pick of the Bears’ bowlers.
Steff Piolet picked up two wickets from the thirty ninth over when Crook was caught at cover by Bears captain Jim Troughton before he bowled Trent Copeland.
Warwickshire then lost two wickets in five balls in the second over when Crook removed Varun Chopra lbw for 2 while Troughton, on 4, then cut Crook to substitute Rob Keogh at point.
Tim Ambrose was then run out by Wakely from mid-off after trying to run a quick single off Crook from the second ball he faced.
Top, scorer Rikki Clarke, reached 50 off 54 balls and after a fourth-wicket partnership of 101 Porterfield 47 was caught at point by Newton off Copeland.
Darren Maddy edged Spriegel to Northants wicketkeeper David Murphy before Murphy then stumped Clarke 65 from 76 balls to give Hall his first wicket.
Brought back into the attack in the 32nd over, Crook bowled Piolet for a four-ball duck and trapped Patel lbw for 1. He then completed his first-ever five-wicket haul in one-day cricket by taking out Wright's off stump before Hall rounded off proceedings by bowling Javid for a bright 31 as the Bears collapsed to 193 all out. Crook took a career-best 5 for 36.
