Bears Batting for Rugby at NatWest CricketForce Weekend

Warwickshire County Cricket Club’s young batting stars Ateeq Javid and Sam Hain joined more than 50 volunteers at Rugby Cricket Club’s Webb Ellis Road ground over the weekend as part of the NatWest CricketForce and a plan to help grow interest in cricket within the town.

NatWest CricketForce is an annual cricketing initiative that helps clubs maintain and restore their facilities to their very best ahead of the new season. Ateeq and Sam joined volunteers for a day of cleaning, painting, assembling, repairing and preparing the ground and wicket.

Rugby CC was selected by the Warwickshire Cricket Board as its NatWest CricketForce showcase because of a new programme being co-ordinated in the town to help increase cricket participation across all age groups.

Darren Franklin, Cricket Development Officer at the Warwickshire Cricket Board, said: “Having staged a forum with six local cricket clubs earlier this year, our programme includes more cricket coaches working at local schools and managing indoor leagues in the winter months.

“Perhaps the biggest activity is taking the Warwickshire Bears on the road to Rugby School on Saturday 6th July to begin their 2013 Friends Life t20 campaign against the Glamorgan Dragons; this is the first time that a Bears’ home t20 match has been played outside of Edgbaston.

“There are good opportunities for cricketers of all ages and abilities in Rugby, so we hope that the Bears match and more coaching opportunities will generate even more interest in the area.”

Rugby CC was awarded ‘Club of the Year’ by the Warwickshire Cricket Board last year for winning promotion to the Premier Division of the Warwickshire Cricket League and securing a Sport England grant for new net facilities and refurbishment of its clubhouse. The Club’s youth teams also faired very well in Warwickshire Cricket Board’s junior competitions.
