Legends and Champions unite at Neal Abberley Memorial Match
After clinching the LV County Championship in Worcester last Thursday, Warwickshire players past and present united at Knowle & Dorridge Cricket Club on Sunday in memory of the Bears former Batting Coach, Neal Abberley.
More than 250 spectators enjoyed a close fought 30-over contest in the glorious sunshine as Ashley Giles’ Legends team - which included the likes of Allan Donald, Dougie Brown, Graeme Welch, Asif Din, Tim Munton and Gladstone Small amongst others – surpassed the current Warwickshire team’s huge total of 328 to win by one wicket off the last ball of the match.
Norman Gascoigne, Chairman of Warwickshire CCC, said: “Abbers was a great man who gave everything to the Bears, and it’s fantastic that so many players past and present were able to celebrate his success today.
“The Club and WOCCA have always held a close relationship, but this is the first time when we’ve come together on the pitch. We hope it can become a regular event to celebrate the impact of Abbers and the Club’s annual Beneficiary.”
As well as celebrating the life of Neal Abberley, the event was also a fundraiser for the Warwickshire Old County Cricketer’s Association and the Neil Carter Benefit Year.
